group of students holding donated food

Hilltop Elementary’s second graders put their citizenship lessons into action by collecting more than 350 food and personal hygiene items for the Azle Community Caring Center!

The project started with a visit from Kristie Cooper, Executive Director of the Azle Community Caring Center and the Azle Education Foundation’s (AEF) Citizen of the Year. She spoke to the second-grade classes about her work at the center and how it helps meet local needs. Inspired by their unit on being "Super Citizens," the students brainstormed ways to help out, listened to each group’s ideas, and tied their collection efforts to a reading goal.

Mrs. Jalah Cooper’s class suggested donating a food or personal hygiene product for every book students read. All of Hilltop’s second-grade classes joined the effort, celebrating each donation as they watched their hard work add up.

After a few weeks of reading and collecting, the second-grade team and several Hilltop families delivered 294 pounds of food and personal care items to the center. While there, students and families learned more about the organization and additional ways to support it.

We are so proud of our Hilltop Hornets for acting like true super citizens and showing such determination to help others!
