On Monday night, a room full of parents, staff, students, and neighbors from across Azle ISD sat down together for the first meeting of the district's Long-Range Facilities Planning Committee. Superintendent Todd Smith welcomed the group and laid out what's ahead. Over the coming months, the committee will dig into the district's facility needs and its finances, working toward a recommendation for the Board of Trustees grounded in data and the community's own priorities.
Facilitator Robby McGowen of VLK Architects walked everyone through how the group will work together and make decisions as a team. Then came a look back at what the 2023 bond has already delivered — the new Azle Junior High School, Forte Junior High School, a new maintenance building, and science labs at every elementary campus — before Chief Financial Officer Summer Mathis broke down how Texas actually funds public schools, from attendance-based state funding to the difference between day-to-day operating dollars and bond dollars.
The night wrapped up with a tour of the new Azle Junior High School. The committee reconvenes October 5 at Azle High School to dig into demographic data and a facility assessment.
