Families in Transition (Homeless) / McKinney-Vento Program

Azle ISD strives to provide a successful educational experience for all students experiencing instability in their housing situation by collaborating with parents, school personnel, and community resources to remove barriers and provide academic opportunities.

Children and youth who lack a fixed, regular, or adequate living situation are considered homeless under federal law. If you feel that this is true for you or your family, please contact our district McKinney-Vento Homeless Liaison.

Families in Transition (Homeless) - The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act was originally authorized in 1987 and reauthorized in 2015 by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) to provide services to children or youth who lack fixed, regular, or adequate nighttime residence.

Due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason, are you or is your family living temporarily:

  • in the home of another person.

  • in a hotel/motel.

  • in a trailer park or camping ground due to the lack of alternative accommodations.

  • in an emergency or transitional shelter (homeless, domestic violence, run-away).

  • in a car, park, public space, abandoned building, substandard housing (which could include no water or electricity or living in an RV/travel trailer), bus or train station, or similar setting, or other place not designated or ordinarily used as regular housing.

If you answered yes, you or your family may be eligible for the following services:

  • Assistance with immediate school enrollment.

  • Enrollment in Azle ISD nutrition program for free breakfast and lunch.

  • Assistance with transportation to school of origin (school attended when permanently housed).
