Silver Creek Elementary Principal Announces Retirement; Interim Named
Silver Creek Elementary Principal, Heidi Nelson, recently announced that she will be retiring on December 17, after 29 years in Azle ISD.
Nelson began her educational career as a fifth-grade teacher at Azle Elementary. She also taught third grade at Silver Creek Elementary, before beginning her administrative career as an assistant principal at Silver Creek in 2007. Nelson later served as an assistant principal in a split campus assignment for Hoover and Azle Elementary Schools, and in 2013, she became the principal of Silver Creek Elementary, where she has served for the last eight years.
Nelson said she has been blessed with an opportunity outside of education to work with her brother. “I am excited about a new adventure; however, Silver Creek will always have a piece of my heart,” said Nelson. “I have loved every single day of my 29 years in education.”
Sheri Welch, Azle ISD Elementary Curriculum Coordinator, will serve as the interim principal at Silver Creek Elementary for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year.
Welch has served as the district’s elementary curriculum coordinator for three years. She has worked in public education for 16 years and has served in various roles including director of assessment and accountability, elementary principal, assistant principal, instructional coach, and self-contained and departmentalized elementary teacher.
Welch received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and a Master of Education degree in Educational Administration from Texas A&M University-Central Texas. She holds elementary and secondary classroom teaching certificates, principal certification, and superintendent certification. She and her husband, Tracy, have three children.
“I am excited to be joining the Silver Creek family,” said Welch.
Mrs. Welch will begin working with Mrs. Nelson at Silver Creek after Thanksgiving break and will transition into the interim principal role for the second semester.
The district will begin searching for Mrs. Nelson’s permanent replacement after Spring Break and plans to have a new principal hired for Silver Creek by the end of the school year.
