Azle ISD Board of Trustees names Todd Smith Interim Superintendent

Azle ISD is pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees have selected Assistant Superintendent Todd Smith to serve as Interim Superintendent for the district. The Board held a Special Meeting Saturday morning and voted to name Smith Interim Superintendent.

Smith has more than 25 years of experience as an educator in Azle ISD, with 13 years in campus administration and he is currently in his sixth year as a district administrator.

During his tenure in public education, Smith has taught at the high school level, served as a high school assistant principal, an elementary principal, district director of operations, and is currently serving as the district’s assistant superintendent.

He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master’s in Educational Administration from Tarleton State University and holds various certifications including superintendent certification and mid-management certification. Smith is also a member of many professional and community organizations.

He lives in the area with his wife, Shannon. They have two sons who both graduated from Azle High School – Zack in 2008 and Kleg in 2016, and two grandchildren, Madelyn and Barrett. In his free time, Smith enjoys spending time with family, working around the house, hunting and fishing.

Smith will take over as Interim Superintendent on March 7, 2020, replacing current Interim Superintendent, Dr. Ray Lea, who has resigned to resolve some health issues.

“One of our strengths as a district is the ability to “next man up” when we lose a member of our administration and we will keep Dr. Lea in our prayers. As a Board, it is our responsibility to ensure that we have an individual in place that we have confidence in, and that individual is Todd Smith. The Board is confident in Todd’s ability to help us continue on the pathway of navigating the challenges of a growing school district,” said Board President, Bill Lane.

Smith said “I am honored to be selected by the Board for this important role in our district. I understand the great responsibility this role has on the success of our students, staff and our district, and I am looking forward to serving the district which has been my home for the last 26 years. My experience and knowledge of our district will help us address the tremendous growth challenges we are facing.”
