Azle ISD Earns State's Highest Financial Accountability Rating

November 16, 2022

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) released final 2021-2022 School Financial Rating System of Texas (FIRST) ratings on November 10, and Azle ISD is pleased to announce the district has earned an “A” rating for “Superior Achievement” for the 2021 fiscal year.

A “Superior Achievement” rating is the state’s highest, demonstrating the quality of Azle ISD's financial management and reporting system. We are extremely proud of our Azle ISD finance department for continuing to be good stewards of our financial resources and once again earning this superior rating.

Ratings for 2021-2022 are based on annual financial reports provided to TEA by districts for the 2021 fiscal year. FIRST ratings are calculated using 20 financial indicators, such as administrative cost expenditures; the accuracy of a district’s financial information submitted to TEA; and any financial vulnerabilities or material weaknesses in internal controls as determined by an external auditor (TEA).

TEA assigns one of four financial accountability ratings (letter grades) to districts, with the highest being A - Superior Achievement, followed by B - Above-Standard Achievement, C - Standard Achievement, and F - Substandard Achievement.

FIRST is a financial accountability system for Texas school districts adopted by TEA in response to the 1999 Texas Legislative session and implemented in 2003 for the 2001-2002 fiscal year. The primary goal is to achieve quality performance in the management of school districts’ financial resources and to encourage public schools to improve their management of financial resources to provide the maximum allocation possible for direct instructional purposes.
