USDA Expected to End Free Meals for Students in 2022-2023

June 1, 2022

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is expected to discontinue the waiver that has allowed schools to offer free meals to all students for the 2022-2023 school year.

Starting next school year (2022-23), in order to receive free or reduced meals, families must be eligible through the Free and Reduced Meal program.

All families are encouraged to apply for this program online through SchoolCafe. Free and Reduced Meal applications for the 2022-2023 school year will be available after July 1, 2022.

In addition, due to federal regulations and overall cost increases for food, the prices for breakfast and lunch may increase next year. 2022-2023 meal prices will be announced later this summer.

Parents, guardians, or students can add funds to student meal accounts online with a credit or debit card at any time through the secure SchoolCafe app. Through SchoolCafe parents can view student meal account balances, purchase history, and set low-balance notifications. To access SchoolCafe, visit www.schoolcafe.com/azleisd or download the app to your device.
