May 16, 2022

Azle ISD would like to welcome Dr. Stephen Garretson as the new principal for Walnut Creek Elementary School. He replaces Jessica Hanson, who will be serving in a new role next school year.

Dr. G, as he is known, comes to Azle ISD from Northwest ISD, where he has served as an Assistant Principal at Wayne A. Cox Elementary School for the last five years.

He has been in public education for 29 years. He has taught every grade level from Kindergarten through 8th Grade and has served as a Title I Facilitator and a Curriculum Writer. In addition to his public education teaching experience, Garretson has also taught at the collegiate level.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from East Texas State University, his Master of Education degree in Early Childhood from Texas A& M University-Commerce, and his Ph.D. in Child Development and Family Sciences from Texas Woman’s University. In 2017, he completed his administrative certificate at the University of North Texas.

Dr. G and his wife Jennifer have three boys – Brendan (20), Ethan (17), and Ryan (13). Jennifer is a veterinarian, and the family enjoys life with all of their furry family members. They are involved in Scouting and enjoy camping, riding their mammoth donkeys, and spending time on their ranch.

“I am honored to be entrusted with the students, staff, and community at Walnut Creek Elementary,” said Dr. G. “As we continue the hard work that has been part of the tradition at Walnut Creek, I look forward to meeting and serving the community as we strive for excellence in all we do.”
