How to Obtain a Bus Driver License

  • School bus drivers are required to hold a Class B CDL with school bus and passenger endorsements.

The first step in obtaining a bus driver's license is to take the written tests at a DPS office and receive your permit to practice driving a bus.

Download the CDL Drivers Handbook and study chapters 1-5 and 10-14. (You do not need chapters 6-9).

Go ahead and make an appointment at a DPS office of your choice. (Lake Worth, Decatur, Weatherford, and Mineral Wells are the closest locations to our area.)

Once you feel you are ready to take the tests, you may go to DPS and take five tests. If you fail any of the tests, you may go back on another day and retake the test you failed. You are allowed three chances to take the tests before having to start over and take all five again.

Once you’ve received your permit, you will need to bring your paperwork to the Azle ISD transportation office where they will make copies and get you scheduled with a trainer to prepare you for the pre-trip, post-trip, and drive test.

This process can take as long as you make it, so the more you put into it, the faster you will complete the process.

If you have any questions, feel free to call the Azle ISD transportation office at 817-444-1322.
