History of Azle Independent School District

1880s
By the 1880s, two schools existed in the area - Ash Creek, which had 15 students, and Walnut Creek, which had 35 students. The schools extended only through 8th grade.

1884
A new white frame school was built at 209 W. Main Street. It was expanded to three rooms, which incorporated a high school, a grammar school, and a primary school. The building served as the school until 1914 when the "Red Brick School" was built.

1900s
By the turn of the century, the Azle School was known as District 18 of Tarrant County Common School Districts.

1914
Azle's first school built to house all grades, the two-story "Red Brick School," opened in 1914. It had four classrooms downstairs and an auditorium upstairs. The first superintendent was W.A. Meacham, who later taught in Fort Worth where a middle school now bears his name.

1920s - 1930s
Azle schools incorporated with numerous rural common school districts in the surrounding area including Promised Land, Sabathany, Steele, and Slover.
In 1928, the name of the school district was to be the Azle County Line Common School District, still Number 18 in Tarrant County. -
1930
In 1930, Azle offered 11 grades which was the maximum offered in Texas at that time. Azle continued to offer 11 grades each year. Of the 53 school districts in Tarrant County, Azle was one of only 11 to offer all grades.

1939
Because a larger schoolhouse was needed, local residents sought New Deal Works Progress Administration (WPA) funds to build a concrete and rock structure in 1939 called the Rock School. The completed building contained five classrooms, a study hall, library, book room, administrative offices, and an auditorium with a 500 person seating capacity.
The class of 1939 (31 students) became the first to graduate from the Rock School. Mr. H.H. Sampson was the district's superintendent and Mr. Estes Reynolds was the principal. -
1946
In July 1946, the Azle County Line Common School District No. 18 of Tarrant and Parker counties incorporated for free school purposes into the Azle Independent School District.
In 1946, the old Red Brick School served as a grade school and was still located behind the Rock School.
In December 1946, the Azle Independent School District reverted to common school status. Seven trustees were named by the Tarrant County board of education and Charles H. Bryant was hired as the superintendent.
The Azle district is the only district ever to go from common to independent and back to common. -
1948
The Liberty School consolidated with Azle followed by the Briar School in September of 1948.

1950
In 1950, 10 additional classrooms were added.

1952
In August 1952, the Azle Common School District became independent again and has remained the Azle Independent School District since that time.
In 1952-53, student enrollment was 893 - an increase of 489 in seven years.
Because of growth and the number of defense industry employees living in the district, the government appropriated $201,326 for a new high school. -
1953
A new Azle High School opened on School Street for grades 9-12. When the new high school opened, the Rock School began serving grades 1-8.

1954
Azle High School was expanded to house grades 7 and 8, and Azle Elementary (the Rock School) began serving grades 1-6.

1955
Walnut Creek Elementary School was built with four classrooms. The following year, four additional classrooms were added. Additions were made to the building over the next few years. The first principal was Wendal E. Hoover.

1958
Vocational Ag. building was added to Azle High School.

1960
Eagle Heights Elementary School opened. The school consisted of six classrooms. Hallie Harmon was the school's first principal.

1962
The Azle ISD administration building and bus maintenance garage were constructed.

1963
Ten classrooms were added to Azle High School, including a science laboratory.

1964
Bluff Springs Common School District consolidated with Azle Independent School District. In September of 1964, the schools were integrated. Azle ISD was the first fully integrated school district in Tarrant County.
Also that year, six additional classrooms and a health and teacher workroom were added to Eagle Heights Elementary. -
1965
A $100,000 School Bond was approved by voters. Hornet field and athletic stadium were built. Drivers Education was offered for the first time in the summer of 1965. The district refunded $262,000 in outstanding Bonds at a net savings of $12,800 over 23 years.

1966
Azle school enrollment was 2,200 in September of 1966.

1967
Voters approved $2.5 million in Bonds for a 10-year improvement plan.

1968
Student enrollment in 1968 was 2,413.

1969
Renovations were made to Azle Elementary and an addition was added to Eagle Heights Elementary that included 12 classrooms and a cafetorium.

1970
Azle High School was built to serve grades 9-12. When the new high school opened on Boyd Road, the building on School Street became Azle Junior High, which it still is today.

1971
Outside tennis and basketball courts were added to Azle High School as well as a vocational automobile mechanics building.

1972
Gymnasium added to Azle High School.

1973
1973-1974 student enrollment was 3,121. The district acquired 30 acres of land on Liberty School Road and an additional 16.1 acres at Azle High School. Annex, eight classrooms, and two laboratories were added to Azle High School, and Hornet Field House was enlarged.

1975
Baseball field constructed at Azle High School.

1976
1976-1977 student enrollment was 3,221. A woodshop building was added to Azle High School, addition was made to the Field House at Azle Junior High, and two temporary kindergarten classrooms were added at Walnut Creek Elementary.

1977
1977-1978 student enrollment was 3,415. Azle ISD acquired 1/6 of the Reno Independent School District. An annex was added to Azle High School and a cafeteria/gymnasium was built at Azle Elementary School.

1978
A new maintenance building was added to the district.

1979
1979-1980 student enrollment was 3,550. Liberty Elementary School was built. Mr. Bobby Price was the first principal at Liberty Elementary and served in this role until his retirement in 1995.

1981
1981-1982 student enrollment was 3,653. A district special education office was constructed. Azle Junior High dressing room added.

1982
1982-1983 student enrollment was 3,700. Fine Arts addition to Azle High School and classrooms added to Walnut Creek Elementary.

1983
1983-1984 student enrollment was 3,864. Classrooms were added to Eagle Heights Elementary. Classrooms and choir/band hall were added to Azle Junior High.

1985
Student enrollment on the first day of the 1985-1986 school year was 4,112. The Azle ISD Administration Building remodeled.

1986
Student enrollment on the first day of the 1986-1987 school year was 4,519. Voters approved a $12 million Bond Package to finance a three-phase building program. Completed construction of physical education and laboratory facility at Azle High School. Plans were made to add air conditioning to Walnut Creek Elementary, Azle Elementary, and Azle Junior High.

1987
1987-1988 student enrollment was 4,752. Silver Creek Elementary School opened with Fred Weir as the first principal. The district's bus parking lot was fenced and Hornet Stadium additions included replacing wooden bleachers with aluminum seating, replacing track, adding parking lot, remodeled restrooms, new concession stand and press box added, and entry walk and gate installed.

1988
Student enrollment hit a record 4,900 students on September 15, 1988. Library and gymnasium were added to Walnut Creek Elementary and three tennis courts were added to Azle High School.

1989
Major expansion and renovation project completed at Eagle Heights Elementary. Six classrooms added to Azle Elementary.

1990
Four additional classrooms were added to Silver Creek Elementary.

1992
A new concession stand was added at Hornet Stadium.

1993
W.E. Hoover Elementary School was built to serve grades 5-6. The building was named after former Azle ISD Superintendent Wendal E. Hoover, who served as the district's superintendent from 1961 until 1985. Charles Richardson was the first principal of Hoover Elementary.

1995
Azle ISD acquired property from the Fort Worth Boys Club on Sandy Beach Road to house the district's alternative campus (Phoenix School). Softball field was constructed at Azle High School.

1997
Voters approved a $31.8 million Bond Package for a capital improvement program. Major renovations were made to the alternative school building after a fire destroyed the inside of the building.

1998
On May 19, 1998, the Azle ISD Board of Trustees voted to name the district's new elementary school on Jackson Trail Cross Timbers Elementary, the new junior high on Sandy Beach Road Azle Junior High North, and the renaming of Azle Junior High to Azle Junior High South.
A new gym was added to Azle Junior High and a new press box was added to Hornet Stadium. -
1999
Cross Timbers Elementary School opened with Dee Gilley as the first principal. Santo J. Forte Junior High School opened. The school was named after former Azle ISD Superintendent Santo J. Forte who retired in November of 1999.
Additions to the bleachers at Hornet Stadium were added in 1999 and the district's first Early Learning Center opened at Cross Timbers Elementary. -
2000
Student enrollment in September of 2000 was 5,832. A major expansion to Azle High School was completed in 2000 that added 20 classrooms, technology wiring, science and computer labs, vocational homemaking lab, cafeteria expansion and band hall, gym and field house.

2005
2005-2006 student enrollment was 5,817.

2009
Hornet Academy started in the basement of Azle High School. The first class graduated in June of 2009.

2011
2011-2012 student enrollment was 5,947.

2013
2013-2014 student enrollment was 5,988. In 2013, artificial turf was installed at Hornet Stadium and an indoor facility was built at AHS.
Voters approved a $20 million Bond Package to build a career and technology center, performance/competition gymnasium, and acquire and install a fire suppression sprinkler system at Azle High School. -
2014
2014-2015 student enrollment was 6,156.

2015
A Career and Technology Education addition and competition gymnasium were added to Azle High School. Entry, concession stand, and restrooms received an update at Hornet Stadium and fencing was installed around the stadium.

2016
Voters approved a $59.5 million Bond Package that included building a new Azle Elementary, a new Walnut Creek Elementary, building an additional wing at Silver Creek Elementary, renovating the existing Azle Elementary to house all central administration offices, repurposing the existing Walnut Creek Elementary to include the Hornet Academy and DAEP, adding safety and security features such as lockdown access controls and controlled entrance vestibules at all Azle ISD campuses. Student enrollment in 2016 was 6,342.

2017
Ground-breaking ceremonies were held at the new Walnut Creek Elementary and Azle Elementary school sites. Student enrollment in October of 2017 was 6,466.

2019
The new Walnut Creek Elementary opened on Stribling Drive and the new Azle Elementary "Rock School" opened on Lakeview Drive. Student enrollment in 2019 was 6,793.

2020
The renovated Azle Elementary "Rock School" building opened as the district's Administration Building, housing all central administration offices and the district's early learning center.
In the fall of 2020, the original Walnut Creek Elementary building became the home of the Azle ISD Pre-K Center with the Hornet Academy, the DAEP campus was moved to Sandy Beach Road, and an elevator was added to Azle Junior High. -
2021
In May of 2021, Voters approved a $46,833,000 Bond Package to finance the construction of Elementary #6 and renovations to increase capacity at Eagle Heights, Hoover, and Liberty Elementary Schools.
In November of 2021, Voters approved a $24.084 million Bond Package to address needs at Azle High School by expanding the cafeteria, upgrading restrooms and cafeteria food service areas, renovating and expanding science labs, and expanding the welding program instructional shop. -
2022
Azle ISD started the 2022-2023 school year with 6,986 students. By the beginning of the second week of school, enrollment had increased to 7,033.
