Mr. J Brent McCartney
Brent McCartney is currently the Choral Director at Azle High School. Brent is now in his 26th year as a choral music educator and continues to strive to create an excitement about choral music amongst his students. His consistent UIL Sweepstakes ratings throughout his career distinguish him as a Texas Choral Music Adjudicator.
Brent grew up in Midland, Texas, where he began singing as a young child at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. He began his piano studies during his fifth-grade year with Ruth Ann Griffin, and organ studies in his ninth-grade year with Debby Vester and later with Lester Ackerman, Jr. In high school, his father Donald Ray McCartney was his choir director at Midland High School. Brent spent his junior and senior years at Lee High School in Midland, where he was under the direction of Robert Stovall and Paula Edwards. Brent was a Texas All-State Choir participant in both his junior and senior years, receiving 1st chair in this prestigious ensemble his senior year. He earned a Bachelor of Music Education from Texas Christian University in 1995.
While at TCU, Brent studied organ with Emmet G. Smith. From 1991 to 1994, Brent received the prestigious TCU Church Music Internship at St. Stephen Presbyterian Church, Fort Worth. Brent learned from Minister of Music and Organist Emeritus Peter Mark Scott, all aspects of church music during this time. Brent currently sings at First Presbyterian Church Fort Worth, where he is the bass section leader.
On a personal note, he also enjoys accompanying his wife, Dr. Laura Lee McCartney, when they sing Broadway show tunes together at home. Brent has two children; Elizabeth, 17, and Luke, 16.
