Azle ISD Nurse's Mission Statement

We believe in the health and integrity of the whole student. As Azle ISD school nurses, we will incorporate all of the tenets of nursing practice to promote the good health of every student and to facilitate a healthy and safe environment conducive to learning.

How much pollution is in the air today? We will soon be able to find out by looking at our flag pole at each of the Azle elementary school campuses. Starting Monday September 26 2011, look for a colored flag alongside our American and Texas flags:

 · Green - good air quality

 · Yellow - moderate air quality

 ·Orange - unhealthy for some people, including children and those with asthma.

· Red - unhealthy for everyone

Our new flag program will help us continue to promote exercise while protecting health. On green and yellow days, teachers will encourage students to get outside and get moving.

When air quality is orange it is still o.k. to play outside, but we will encourage kids to reduce activities that involve lots of running.

On red days, we will have indoor recess as the air quality is not healthy for outdoor activities.

The flags will help teach those students with asthma to become aware of when to limit their outdoor activity. This program will also guide school staff to modify outdoor activity for those students whose health is affected by air quality.

The Asthma Flag Program is used in many U.S cities and we're proud to be one of the many districts in the DFW metroplex to adopt it. We hope by participating in this program to raise awareness on our campuses and in our community about the relationship between air quality and the impact on our student's daily health.

Parents are often confronted with this decision when their child complains of not feeling well. The guidelines set forth by the district can help you decide. It will not cover every medical condition and does not take the place of seeking medical attention. Please consult your doctor for specific medical advice.

•FEVER: Students should remain home if they have an oral temperature of 100.0 or higher (before taking medication such as Tylenol or Advil)

•CONTAGIOUS ILLNESS: Student's should remain home for 24 hours after starting antibiotics or otherwise as directed by their physician.

•DIARRHEA: Students experiencing 2 or more watery stools in a 24 hour period should remain at home.

•LICE: A student infected may not return to school until they have been treated and are free of lice. Examination by the nurse is required before re-entering school.

•VOMITING: A student who has vomited 2 or more times in a 24 hour period should be kept at home.
